Spanish champions Barcelona have afforded star forward and Brazil hero Neymar time off following the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Neymar, who inspired his country to their first gold medal for football at the games, will remain in the country until after Brazil’s international match against Ecuador, reports BBC Sport.

The two-week international break means the 24-year-old will only return to Spain in September, where he will link-up with his teammates ahead of their tie with Leganes.

Neymar captained the Brazil sided to victory despite an uninspired start to the tournament in which they drew successive early games 0-0. The side came good, however, with Neymar netting three times and striking the winning penalty in the final against Germany.

Neymar will be joined by the likes of Brazil Olympic team compatriots Gabriel Barbosa and Gabriel Jesus for the senior side’s clash and Ecudor.

The decision to rest the star means Barcelona will face a challenging trip away to San Mames against Athletic Bilbao without the player’s services.

The La Liga match will take place on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 20:15.
