Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge believes Manchester United’s treatment of Bastian Schweinsteiger could discourage players from joining the English side.

Schweinsteiger, who played the best football of his career with the German giants, has been marginalised and humiliated by Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Not part of the Portuguese’s plans, the 32-year-old World Cup winners has been banished to training with the club’s U23s.

‘I could hardly believe it,’ Rummenigge told Bild. 

‘One or two players are going to think long and hard in future about whether they want to go to such a club. Nothing like that has ever happened at Bayern Munich.’

Ottmar Hitzfeld, the man who gave Schweinsteiger his professional debut at the age of 18, has also criticised the star’s treatment.

‘It’s a lack of respect for a worthy player,’ he told the Redaktions Network Deutschland.

‘It’s a method which is strange to me.

‘Schweinsteiger is a key player, a world champion, a personality, while at the same time he has an exceptional attitude,’ he added.

Schweinsteiger has struggled to produce his best form since arriving at Old Trafford and made just 21 appearances for the side last season.
