Iceland pulled off an upset as they held on for a remarkable 1-1 draw against Portugal on Tuesday in Paris.

Swansea City star Gylfi Sigurdsson had a wonderful chance to open the scoring in the third minute but his shot was directed straight at Rui Patricio. That Iceland attack sparked Portugal into life and they dominated much of the possession for the opening quarter of an hour.

Portugal had two decent chances to open their Euro 2016 account but Vieirinha’s shot in the 18th minute was easily dealt with before Nani was denied from point blank range three minutes later.

The former Manchester United winger’s header aimed straight at the goalkeeper from a Cristiano Ronaldo cross. Ronaldo had a good chance to help his side into the lead but he failed to get shot away and the score remained level after 26 minutes.

Nani finally paid Portugal’s pressure count when he calmly sent his side into the lead and that’s the way it remained going into the break.

Iceland wasted no time in getting back onto level terms and five minutes into the second half Birkir Bjarnason opened Iceland account at major international events.

The second half continued in the same manner as the first as Portugal had a number of shots on the Iceland goal. Andre Gomes was denied on the hour mark as was Ricardo Quaresma in the 78th minute.

Ronaldo missed a wonderful chance in the 85th minute but his header was directed straight at the goalkeeper as Iceland survived a wave after wave of attack to claim a point in the Group F battle.
