Brazil coach Tite has revealed the added emotional importance of Tuesday’s friendly clash with Germany, the team who destroyed their World Cup hopes in 2014.
Brazil were favourites to win the famous trophy but that all changed when they came up against Germany at the Maracana as an unthinkable situation played itself out.
The Selecao faced Die Mannschaft in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup in what is largely considered the darkest day in Brazilian football, as the home side were ripped apart by Joachim Löw’s team, suffering an embarrassing 7-1 hammering.
Brazil are now a side transformed after going through some serious rebuilding. Dunga was initially appointed as head coach but after a poor Copa América Centenario campaign and faltering at the initial stages of World Cup qualifying, Dunga was replaced by Tite in June 2016. The five-time world champions then went on to win eight consecutive matches and secure their berth in Russia.
On Friday, the five-time world champions beat the 2018 hosts of the competition Russia 3-0 and will be hoping to take another step forward against the reigning world champions, according to the former Corinthians boss.
‘The 7-1 game is the most recent game and, of course, we know that we’ll play Germany in Berlin. They were world champions, they beat us 7-1 and it’s a step that’s passed. We are in a building period and emotionally it will be important,’ Tite said, as quoted by ESPN.
‘Against Germany, we will want to play football, to be competitive, mentally strong, and put an idea in play. We are looking to impose our way of playing,’ concluded the Brazilian.
