A controversial goal from Raul Ruidiaz ended Brazil’s participation in the 2016 Copa America as they tumbled out of Group B.

Ruidiaz’s goal was allowed to stand after a lengthy delay as the match officials conferred on the goal’s legality.

Needing just a draw to advance to the quarter-finals, a feat that the team has achieved every time since 1993, Brazil were on course for qualification despite failing to score the decisive goal as Pedro Galles turned in a stunning performance in goals for the Peruvians.

Galles denied Filipe Luis in the 12th minute before producing a fingertip save to prevent Gabriel from getting his name on the scoresheet.

Both sides had a number of half chances but the was turned in its head in the 75th minute following Andy Polo’s cross that was turned into the net by Ruidiaz.

Brazil had one final shot in the 93rd minute but Elias was denied by the impressive Gallese.

The win allowed Peru to top Group B on seven points, two better than Ecuador with Brazil out of the competition after amassing four points. Haiti finished bottom of the pool without a point to their name.
