Spanish international Sergio Busquets is set to leave Barcelona at the end of his contract in June, the legendary midfielder confirmed on Wednesday.
“The moment has arrived to announce this is my last season at Barcelona,” said Busquets on Instagram.
“It has been an unforgettable journey.”
Busquets has won La Liga eight times and the Champions League three times with Barcelona prior to this season, when the Catalans are poised to win the competition once more for the first time in four years.
The 34-year-old has made over 700 appearances for Barca since breaking into the first team in 2008 under their former coach Pep Guardiola.
He remained silent about his potential next move, though Spanish news sources have suggested he could join a Saudi Arabian team.
“It has been an honour, a dream, a pride. It has been everything to be able to defend and represent this badge for so many years, but everything has a beginning and an end,” continued Busquets.
“Although it has not been an easy decision, I think the time has come.”
Xavi Hernandez, the head coach of Barcelona and a longtime teammate of Busquets in the midfield, wanted the midfielder to return for the upcoming campaign but left it up to the player to make that decision.
When his contract with Barcelona expires, the seasoned player is rumoured to favour a transfer to Major League Soccer in the United States, with Inter Miami among the teams mentioned.
However, the player has recently been mentioned in Spanish media as being linked to a move to the Saudi Arabian top division.
Another player who might end up in the oil-rich kingdom is Busquets’ close friend and former Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, whose move to the Middle East was reportedly a “done deal” according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
The future of the World Cup winner, according to Messi’s father and agent Jorge Messi, won’t be decided until the end of the current campaign.
Busquets was an important member of the national team for almost 15 years before he announced his retirement from international competition in December. He helped Spain win the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012.
