Borussia Dortmund has confirmed the sale of Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Manchester United.

A fee of £26.3-million has been agreed between the two side’s for one of the stand-out players in the Bundesliga in recent seasons, but that the player still has to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms before a deal is finalised, reports SkySports.

The Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke insists that his side accepted an offer from United to cash in on the midfielder before his contract expires at the German club.

‘Manchester (United) made us an enormously lucrative offer. Had we rejected it the player would have left in 2017 without a fee and we would have just delayed the issue for a year,’ Watzke said.

The Armenian captain joined the Bundesliga side back in 2013 from Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee worth £23.5-million.

Mkhitaryan scored 18 goals and created 25 assists last season for the German club and was named the Bundesliga Players’ player of the season.

He featured in a total of 59 appearances for Armenia and is currently their all-time leading goalscorer, having netted 19 times for his country.

The midfielder would become United’s second marquee signing in 24 hours following the confirmation of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival at Old Trafford.
