Chile to defend Copa America title

Chile have a chance to defend their Copa America title following their 2-0 victory over Colombia in the semi-final at Soldier Field in Chicago.

La Roja will now face Argentina in the finals on Sunday, a repeat of last year final when the Chilean national team defeated La Albiceleste in a penalty shoot-out to clinch their first Copa America title.

While Argentina advanced to the finals after their 4-0 thrashing of USA, with talisman Lionel Messi scoring to become La Albiceleste’s all-time top goals scoring with 55 goal.

Chile picked up where they left off after their 7-0 thumping of Mexico, but two quick first-half goals meant the Chileans would play in their second Copa America finals in succession.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Charles Aranguiz scored the opening goal in the seventh minute.

Chile took the lead in the seventh minute as Charles Aranguiz latched onto a poor clearance from Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado to slot the ball under Colombia shot-stopper David Ospina.

With Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal suspended, Chile looked the stronger side in attack as a long goal kick from Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo found Alexis Sanchez, who turned Santiago Arias inside out on the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a fierce low shot which struck the bottom of the post.

The ball rolled into the path of Jose Fuenzalida who had the simplest of finishes to make it 2-0 after only 11 minutes.

Colombia nearly reduce the deficit to one goal but Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo made two big saves to deny La Albiceleste just before the half-time interval.

Colombia’s chances of coming back from 2-0 down were decreased after midfielder Carlos Sanchez was shown his marching order 57 minutes into the match, for a second bookable offence.

Ospina was called in to action stopping a headed effort on goal in the 66th minute.

Colombia will now take on the United States for third place finish in the tournament.

Ultimately, Chile held on to their 2-0 lead to secure a place in the Copa America finals against Argentina.
