Spain defender Gerard Pique says his teammates performed well in both attack and defence as they opened their Euro 2016 campaign with a win.
STAT ATTACK: Iniesta lays the platform for Spanish win
The defending European Champions left it late against Czech Republic despite dominating across all key areas on the pitch.
Pique eventually sealed the win as he latched onto a cross from Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta in the 87th minute to get La Roja off to a perfect start.
He admitts it was tough for his side to break down the opposition who were intent to sit back and defend deep.
‘Of course it’s a massive thing to score the goal that gives us the win, but we all performed very well – we managed to play very well both at the back and up front,’ the experienced centre back said after the match.
‘If you can play and attack well, that means you open up the pitch and can find a way through, even if the opposition are defending really deep. That’s the way you create chances: by creating space.’ he concluded.
Spain’s next clash of the group stages is against Turkey at the Allianz Riviera on Friday, June 17.
Kick-off is at 21:00.
