De Gea vs Casillas headache for Spain

Spanish national team coach Vicente del Bosque remains undecided on his first choice goalkeeper for Euro 2016 as the battle between David De Gea and Iker Casillas heats up.

Casillas, the former Real Madrid captain, faces stiff competition from his long-time Manchester United understudy, with the former having seen a drop-off in his spectacular standards over recent years. De Gea has been in sublime form for the past three seasons in the Premier League and looks set to finally claim the gloves as his country’s number one.

Casillas got the nod for Spain’s recent 6-1 drumming of South Korea, while it will likely be De Gea who lines up between the sticks for the Spanish when they face Georgia in a friendly on Tuesday.

‘It’s possible that De Gea will play [against Georgia]. Casillas did so against South Korea and that’s all we can say,’ Del Bosque said, adding he is yet to decide who will guard the Spanish goal for the tournament proper.

‘I don’t have to make that decision now, and I’ll make my mind up at a later date.’

‘I don’t know because our concern is that the 20 field players have a chance and become familiar,’ Del Bosque added.

La Roja have been drawn in Group D for the European Championships. There, the double defending champions will come up against Turkey, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

‘We know how we’re going to play. The most important thing is to know how we play and [against Georgia] we will put it into practice,’ del Bosque concluded.

Casillas made 40 appearances for Porto this term, while De Gea featured 49 times for the Red Devils.

Spain play their opening fixture of Euro 2016 against the Czech Republic on June 13.
