European Championship and World Cup winning Spain tactician Vicente del Bosque has stepped down from his position as the national side’s head coach.

Del Bosque, whose Spain side crashed out in the round of 16 of Euro 2016, reportedly made it clear he had no intention of renewing his contract, a decision which has now been confirmed by the Spanish Football Federation [Rfef].

‘Vicente del Bosque will not continue at the front of the national team,’ an Rfef statement read.

‘The Rfef president, Angel Maria Villar, and national team selector, Vicente del Bosque, had a meeting today, July 4, in Madrid where the coach has told the Rfef president of his idea not to continue at the front of the national team.’

The statement also added that del Bosque would look to continue working with the Rfef in a different role, the specifics of which are yet to be confirmed.

The 65-year-old is Spain’s most successful coach in history, boasting a 75 percent win ratio with the side.

‘I have a contract until July 31 with the Federation. I have no intention of continuing as coach but there’s still a bit of time left,’ del Bosque told radio station Rne. 

‘On July 31 I will leave coaching. I will be available to help. I will no longer be sitting on the bench, although I will also be close hoping that things go well in Spanish football,’ he confirmed.
