England midfielder Eric Dier provided a moment of magic but the Three Lions failed to capitalise on his effort.
The holding midfielder, who played no part in his side’s qualifying campaign, capped a fantastic personal season by scoring a delightful free kick against Russia.
It took a moment of magic from Dier to open the scoring as captain Wayne Rooney allowed the Tottenham Hotspur star to take a 73rd minute free kick. Dier struck home sweetly to send the large English contingent into hysterics until a Russian equaliser in stoppage time.
Playing alongside Rooney in midfield, Dier recovered from a shaky start to become a star player on the the night. Dier completed 58 of his 64 passes on the night, according to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre.
Involved in just 7 duels on the night, the Spurs’ star won 5 as he continuously broke up the few Russian attacks in Marseille; repaying th faith shown in him by manager Roy Hodgson.
Dier won 100% of his tackles and chipped in with two interceptions. A fine personal display was marred by a late lapse in concentration which hands neighbours Wales the advantage in thief group.
The draw continues the curious run in the European Championships; they have never won their opening game.
