Now, Dortmund are eager to bring their former star back from the German champions, but a deal has yet to be struck.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed that negotiations had begun over the weekend, but Watzke has since insisted the clubs are still a long way off from agreeing a fee.
‘We can imagine Gotze returning to BVB,’ Watzke told TZ. ‘But it is not a done deal yet and no final decisions have been made yet.
We have not reached an agreement with anyone, not with the club, nor with the player. It has to work out for us financially,’ he admitted.
Meanwhile, Dortmund will begin their pre-season preparations on Thursday when they depart for a tour of China.
‘Thanks to modern communication tools, we can keep working on this from China,’ Watzke added.
Gotze is currently contracted to Bayern until June 2017. The player made just 16 appearances for Bayern last term, scoring four goals.
