Former England and Liverpool player John Barnes believes England’s problems are a result of a lack of clinical finishing at Euro 2016. 

The 52-year-old, who has had brief spells as a manager, was speaking as part of the SuperSport panel tasked with analysing the action from the Euro 2016 match between England and Wales.

According to Barnes, it is a lack of clinical finishing that has held the Three Lions back, despite victory against Wales.

‘You would expect him to hit the target,’ said Barnes, commenting on a golden chance missed by England’s Raheem Sterling early in the game.

‘The his what I’m talking about; the fine margins between the little details of good crossing, good finishing, and that’s what let England down. We haven’t got those clinical players.

‘Great dribblers, but not clinical enough,’ Barnes concluded.

England fell behind in the match following a long range free kick from Gareth Bale.

Despite the thunderous mature of the strike, Barnes has questioned England goalkeeper Joe Hart’s positioning, believing he should have been further off his line to narrow the angle of the shot.

‘He’s [only] half a yard off his line. The shot’s coming from a long distance. The shot’s not even in the corner. In fact, he pushes it into the corner, so it has to go down as a goalkeeping mistake,’ said Barnes.

England managed to turn the game around in the second period as substitutes Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge scored, but the side wasted numerous chances before claiming a last ditch winner.
