Iceland defender Ragnar Sigurdsson believes England underestimated his side as the Three Lions crashed out of Euro 2016 at the hands of the minnows. 

England struck early as Wayne Rooney netted a penalty following a foul on Raheem Sterling, but Iceland bounced back to equalise just two minutes later, before taking a surprise lead in the 19th minute.

It was a lead they never relinquished, as Iceland held on to progress into the quarter-finals, where France awaits.

‘What mattered is England thought it would be a walk in the park,’ Sigurdsson said, as reported by the Daily Star.

‘But we had faith in our ability. England started very well, with a lot of power. But they were shocked by the equaliser and then the second goal shortly after.’

Iceland snatched their equaliser following a long throw before Joe Hart may have done better to keep out a shot from Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

‘They panicked a little bit. They worked hard, but it is not easy to score against Iceland. It went well. We didn’t feel they created any major chances in the second half. We could clear most of their long balls.

‘We were never really stressed, apart from the final minutes before the final whistle.’

Iceland’s tie with France will be played at Stade de France on Sunday.
