The Football Association has confirmed that Sam Allardyce has left his position as manager of the England national team by mutual consent.

The 61-year-old’s conduct was inappropriate of the England manager and he accepts he made a significant error of judgement and has apologised for his actions.

However, due to the serious nature of Allardyce’s actions, the FA and Allardyce have mutually agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

The FA’s priority concern is to protect the interests of the game and maintain the highest standards of conduct in football.

The manager of the England men’s senior team is a position which must demonstrate strong leadership and show respect for the integrity of the game at all times, reports the FA website.

England U21 manager Gareth Southgate will take charge of the senior team for the next four matches against Malta, Slovenia, Scotland and Spain as the FA goes in  of finding a new England manager.
