After watching Paris Saint-Germain benefit from VAR in last Saturday’s Coupe de la Ligue final, AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao revealed that he believes that the technology could ‘kill football’.

PSG won the game 3-0 but it was the use of VAR which stole the headlines after the match at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique. PSG striker Kylian Mbappe was brought down in the box by Kamil Glik in the eighth minute and, after a lengthy VAR process, a penalty kick was awarded. Edinson Cavani stepped up to score the subsequent spot kick.

The debated technology was then involved again just before the break. This time the system was called into action to rule out a potential Falcao goal due to an offside call.

After the game, Falcao branded the decisions as a ‘disgrace’, claiming that the video referee won Les Parisiens a record eighth French League Cup title.

‘It’s frustrating when in two cases where there has been VAR, it has served to help PSG,’ Falcao told Canal after the game. ‘Sometimes, after looking at the images, nothing is clear and this kind of thing can kill football.

‘Reviewing the penalty, they have lost four minutes, and with my goal, another four, but they only added two [at the end of the half].

‘It’s amazing and frustrating but we’re leaving with our heads up because we have given everything even though we did not win the title,’ Falcao added.

‘PSG are very good but they needed the video referee to help them to beat us.’
