A moment of magic from Dimitri Payet helped France to a 2-1 win over Romania in the opening match of Euro 2016.

According to SASoccermag.co.za’s Opta-powered match centre, the West Ham winger was the standout performer during the contest and his late strike ended the match as a contest.

Payet’s 90 minute contribution was as important as any league match this season and will continue to be key to his national team cause as the tournament progresses. His 92 touches during the game proving as crucial as any other player and ultimately keeping teammate Paul Pogba out of the spotlight.

The Hammers’ star continued his fine domestic form with 45 passes on the evening, misplacing just 10 as he stepped up into a central creative role for his national side despite the presence of Atletico Madrid star Antoinne Griezmann and Pogba.

Despite completing just 3 of 8 crosses, Payet’s all-round influence proved to be the difference between a spirited Romania side and the hosts.
