Germany bounced back from their opening game loss against France with an impressive 4-2 win over Portugal in Munich on Saturday evening.

After a dominant start, the Germans were denied an opener by VAR following a fantastic volleyed finish from Robin Gosens at the back post but then, against the run of play, Portugal broke on a rare foray forward with Diogo Jota teeing up Cristiano Ronaldo for the lead in the 15th minute.

Germany then turned the game around completely when Gosens again caused havoc with a far-post volley, which was turned in accidentally by Rúben Dias in the 35th minute before Raphaël Guerreiro also put into his own net to give the ‘home’ side the lead with two own goals in the space of four minutes.

After the break, Joachim Low’s side extended their lead with a goal entirely of their own making as the sensational Gosens drilled a low cross on to the foot of Kai Havertz to grab his first of the tournament.

They then added a fourth on the hour mark when one wing back crossed for another, Joshua Kimmich picking out Gosens to plant a header home from close range.

Portugal cut the deficit back to two when Ronaldo repaid Jota’s earlier favour by setting up his teammate for another easy finish.

The result had Germany leapfrogging Portugal into second place, a point behind France and two ahead of Hungary after those sides’ earlier draw.
