Paul Pogba was the hero for France on Monday evening as his goal earned Les Blues a hard-fought win over the Netherlands, earning the star praise from Antoine Griezmann.
Pogba, who has received criticism for his lacklustre displays in a Manchester United shirt of late, struck the only goal of the game as he hammered home from 30 yards to earn France all three points against the Dutch.
The heroics of the 23-year-old were subsequently praised by France forward Griezmann, who admitted he was pleased by Pogba’s good showing.
‘I’m happy for him,’ he told TF1. ‘He played the same as against Bulgaria [a 4-1 win on Friday], except here it had a purpose. Tomorrow he will make all the newspapers. This will do him good. I hope he will have the support of journalists,’ he added.
The hard-fought victory required some astute defending from the French, who determined to defend their lead having struggled to break down the Dutch outfit.
‘We wanted to take the three points. It was a good first half, then we tried to defend well,’ Griezmann concluded.
France sit joint top of Group A qualifying in Europe with the side now sitting on a total of seven points, level with Sweden.
