Manchester City have all but sealed a deal for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan,  a deal that would make him the first signing of the Pep Guardiola era.

The finer details of the deal are yet to be ironed out, but the £20-million transfer is believed to be imminent, despite Gundogan’s recent injury troubles, reports the Independent.

The midfielder, who managed 36 appearances for Dortmund this season, recently underwent knee surgery. The setback was just one of many the player has suffered over the past few seasons, which makes his signing a calculated gamble.

However, with Yaya Toure angling to leave the club, Guardiola is keen to add the player to City’s midfield, having witnessed first-hand what Gundogan is capable of while in Germany with Bayern Munich. Toure is reportedly keen to rejoin former City manager Roberto Mancini at Internazionale, but with the player likely to need to take a wage cut to facilitate the move, the Ivorian may well opt to stay after all.

Among City’s other reported targets are in-demand Everton defender John Stones – who has been selected as part of England’s Euro 2016 squad – and Athletic Bilbao’s central defender Aymeric Laporte.

The need for defensive reinforcements comes as club captain Vincent Kompany has struggled with injuries of his own of late, while Eliaquim Mangala has largely failed to impress.
