Leicester City have announced that Spanish defender Luis Hernandez will join the club on a four-year deal from July 1.

Hernandez, who arrives on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with La Liga side Sporting Gijon, made almost 140 appearances for the Spanish side, Leicester’s club’s website has confirmed.

The player arrived at Sporting having played for Real Madrid’s youth team. The defender featured for Real’s B and C sides before making the switch to Sporting Gijon back in 2012. He will add useful cover to Leicester’s defensive options as the side look to strengthen in depth in order to facilitate their first ever Champions League run.

Hernandez joins Claudio Ranieri’s side following an heroic display on the final day of the season for Sporting which guaranteed the Spanish side another season in the top flight.

The player is known to be both a good ball player and have excellent reading of the game. He also brings experience of having faced some of the best sides in world football, most notably Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Hernandez made 36 appearances for Sporting last term.
