History favours Italy over Germany

History is on Italy’s side when they tackle Germany in the third Euro 2016 quarter-final in Bordeaux on Saturday.

Italy have never lost to Germany in a competitive fixture and have beaten them in three semi-finals, including at Euro 2012 and will be looking to build on their demolition of Spain in the round of 16 when they face Joachim Low’s side in Bordeaux.

Germany, three-time winners of the competition, have never lost a European Championship quarter-finals in five attempts. Italy can only boast a 50% record at this stage, having won two and lost two of their four last-eight ties.

A player who still has plenty to prove is veteran Mario Gomez. Despite 29 goals from 67 games for the national side, the best return of any player in the side, Gomez has struggled to win over the public’s affection.

‘I really only care about winning the European Championship,’ Gomez explained on Wednesday.

‘If the coach needs me for 15 minutes, I’ll be there.’

‘I’ve played a few tournaments now, and a good round of 16 or group stage counts for nothing. So far, it’s been a good tournament. For it to be great, we have to go all the way.’

The match kicks off at 21:00.
