Hungary took full advantage of their chances as they opened Euro 2016 with a 2-0 win over Austria in Bordeaux.

The Austrians entered Tuesday’s encounter as many pundits favourite outsiders and almost lived up to that billing inside a minute as David Alaba hit the woodwork.

It would be the start of things to come for the Bayern star who ended the half with a tackle completion rate of 100% as well as the same tally for his attacking duels.

The first half turned into a battle of the midfielders as Zoltan Gera matched his Austrian counterpart with a dynamic display.

Stoke City forward Marko Arnautovic created the half’s best chance for Austria after a mazy run down the left flank but his cross was spurned by Harnik at the back post with four minutes left in the first half.

Two minutes later Hungary fans were left to rue Balazs Dzsudzsak’s wastefulness in front of goal after he blasted wide after finding himself in behind the Austrian defence.

Hungary ended the first 45 with four shots, two more than their Group F rivals. In fact, Austria completed just 68% of their passes, far inferior to Hungary’s 75% with possession even.

Gera attempted to get Hungary off to the best possible start but snatched at his 52 minute shot and dragged it wide.

Austria had their goalkeeper to thank after he denied Dzsudzsak’s 30-yard screamer. After 55 minutes, it was clear that Hungary were far from outsiders for Group F qualification.

Just after the hour mark Adam Szalai put Hungary ahead, slotting past Almer after a slick bit of interplay between himself and Kleinheisler.

It went from bad to worse for Austria who had Dragovic sent off for a second bookable offence. The dismissal effectively ended Austria’s challenge in the match and were finished off by Stieber in the 87th minute after his delightful chip over Almer.
