A late own goal denied Iceland their first-ever victory at a major tournament during their 1-1 draw with Hungary in their Euro 2016 Group F encounter in Marseille.

Heading into the match, Hungary have beaten Iceland in five successive matches with Icelandic national team’s last victory coming in June 1995.

However, Hungary and Iceland have faced each other 10 times previously, but none of there matches has ended as in a draw (three wins for Iceland, seven for Hungary).

Both sides started of lively at the Stade Veledrome as Hungarian forward Zoltan Gera tried to release Balazs Dzsudzsak down the right, but Kari Arnason was on hand to intercept, three minutes into the match.

Iceland launched their first real sign of attack from a long throw-in as Jon Daoi Bodvarsson headed the ball goal-wards, but couldn’t keep his effort down, missing the target.

After 21 minutes of play Iceland were left frustrated as they found it hard to get out of their own half.

Iceland had a glorious opportunity to take the lead as Johann Gudmundsson brushed Tamas Kadar off the ball, before seeing his low shot saved by Gabor Kiraly.

Hungarian midfielder Laszlo Kleinheisler come close to breaking the deadlock when he whipped a shot just wide of the post in the 34th minute.

With six minutes until the half-time interval Gunnarsson was appeared to have been brought down by Kadar. Gylfi Sigurdsson stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake sending Kiraly the wrong way to hand Iceland lead.

Hungary dominated most of the first-half but Iceland went into the half-time break leading 1-0.

The second-half resumed with Kadar sending a good ball into the box, but Ragnar Sigurdsson was there to nick the ball away from Tamas Priskin.

Iceland pushed forward in the hope of doubling their lead as Icelandic winger Bodvarsson’s attempted bicycle kick went well over the Hungarian goal in the 54th minute.

Hungary had been relevantly quite in the second-half as they tired to probe for space but Iceland had so many men back and made it difficult for them to break through.

In the 65th minute Hungary work there way into the box, but Arl Skulason was on hand to clear the ball away and deny Hungary the chance of getting a shot at goal.

Just seven minutes later and Hungry looked to have gained a bit of momentum as substitute Daniel Bode turned well on the edge of the area, but scuffed his shot asit rolled straight into the arms of Icelandic goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson.

Hungry finally got there all important equalising goal in the 88th minute as Birkir Saevarsson turned Nemanja Nikolic’s superb low ball into his own net.

Iceland came close as Eidur Gudjohnsen attempted at goal went narrowly wide of the post during the last seconds of injury time, but with time running out, both sides could do little to find the winning goal.

The match between Iceland and Hungry ended as both sides shared the spoils at 1-1 during their Euro 2016 Group F encounter.
