Iceland advance into the Euro 2016 quarter-finals following a hard fought 2-1 comeback victory over England at the Allianz Riviera on Monday.

Heading into the match Icelandic coaches Lars Lagerback and Heimir Hallgrimsson started with the same starting line-up that saw off Austria 2-1 at the Stade de France.

Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson tries his third different starting line-up of the tournament, bringing back Wayne Rooney, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose,Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling after their 0-0 draw with Slovakia at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

England got off to a great start after being awarded a penalty in the fourth minute after Sterling was brought down in the area by Icelandic goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson. England captain Wayne stepped up to take the spot-kick and Halldorsson guessed correctly, but Rooney’s kick proved too strong for the Icelandic shot-stopper.

Two minutes later and Iceland levelled matters as Aron Gunnarsson long throw-in into the box was flicked on by Kari Arnasson and found Gylfi Sigurdsson, who scored from close range.

Iceland took the lead for the first time as the ball fell to Kolbeinn Sigthorsson on the edge of the box. He took one touch to the side, to guide the ball goalwards, forcing England goalkeeper Joe Hart into making a diving save, but it broke through his hand and rolled into the net.

England started to gain their momentum back in the 28th minute when Kane drove forward from his own half, finding Sturridge in acres of space. The Liverpool striker composed himself and found Kane lurking at the back post, as the Spurs strikers’ first-time volley was tipped over by Halldorsson.

With Five minutes remaining and England missed a great opportunity to find an equalising goal before the half-time interval as Kane sent his free kick to the far post, which found Chris Smalling, who headed the ball over the bar from two yards out

In the 57th minute Hart pulled off a decent save as Sigurdsson tried an overhead kick and as the ball dropped to him, it was guided straight into the hands of English goalkeeper.

Sturridge had a great chance to draw his side level in the 62nd minute as the striker cut in and squared a ball to Alli, who took it on the half-volley, but it came off his shin and flew over the bar.

Iceland could’ve doubled their lead in the 73rd minute as Gudmundsson drove forward and fired a shot at goal from the near corner, but his effort went just over the bar.

England had the clearest chance of the second-half as Jack Wilshere found Kane to the right of goal, but Kane couldn’t get enough on his header to drive it across to the far post.

With six minutes remaining Gunnarsson skipped past Wilshere and fired from an angle, but Hart put it clear for a corner. From the resulting corner Arnason got up and sent his headed effort goalwards, but it dropped a yard wide of Hart’s left post.

During injury-time England close to sending the match into extra-time after Sturridge floated a ball into the area to Jamie Vardy, however, Arnason was there to clear the ball out for a corner. Alli could’ve levelled matters but his effort bounced off his face and flew just wide of goal.

Ultimately, Iceland held on to a 2-1 victory over England to book a place in the quarter-finals against host nation France.
