A late winner by Robbie Brady saw Ireland clinch qualification for the last-16 of Euro 2016 on Wednesday with the side set to face hosts France in the next round.

Ireland were infamously denied qualification for 2010 World Cup in South Africa after Thierry Henry handled the ball in the build-up to an extra time William Gallas winner.

Ireland will now be gunning for revenge against the French, despite only having four players from their World Cup qualifying squad still actively involved in the current side.

‘That goal did hurt the whole nation at the time but hopefully we can now get a result against France and get one back on them,’ Ireland’s Jeff Hendrick told Mirror. 

‘I remember the game but it’s in the past, it’s a different group of players – it won’t be stuck in our head. I suppose we would have been delighted if we had scored a goal like that!’

Ireland playmaker Wes Hoolahan, however, wants his side to put the incident behind them.

‘There is history there against France. Thierry hand-balling for the goal, but we’ll probably forget about that. It’s important we go into Sunday’s game confident. We have nobody to fear.’

The contest between the sides will be played at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Lyon.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
