Gabriel Jesus scored and assisted to help Arsenal secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Sevilla in the Champions League at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium on Tuesday.

The Brazilian striker set up Gabriel Martinelli’s first goal with a beautiful turn and pass. He then doubled Arsenal’s lead with a deadly finish, which put Mikel Arteta’s team on top of Group B.

You can now see that Arsenal has six points, one more than Lens. Lens drew 1-1 at home against PSV Eindhoven, who are now tied with Sevilla on two points.

Diego Alonso’s team played with a lot of spirit in his second game in charge. On Saturday, they played very well and intensely in a draw against La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

On the other hand, Arsenal was better at attacking, and Jesus’ skill made the difference in a fun game in Andalusia. He has scored in all of his team’s competition games.

“He came here for a reason, he changed our world, he brought so much belief and energy for the team,” Arteta told reporters.

“The team relies on those players to win games, we need players like this. To come here and to win, big credit to the boys.”

One bad thing for Arsenal was that Jesus had to leave the game early because he hurt his hamstring, according to Arteta.

“He hurt something in his hamstring and he had to come off, I’m worried about that,” added the coach.

Before the game, Sevilla put up banners celebrating their record seven Europa League wins. But in the middle of their defence is Sergio Ramos, who has won the Champions League four times.

The 37-year-old did a good job of controlling the defence as the home team kept Arteta’s team at bay for most of the first half, which included chances for Martinelli.

The first one was saved by Orjan Nyland, who quickly ran off his line to deflect Martinelli’s shot off the striker and out for a goal kick.

In the pouring rain at the boisterous Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, the home team won. Arsenal custodian David Raya looked unsure when under pressure and lost the ball several times.

After the Spain international made two mistakes in Saturday’s Premier League draw at Chelsea, Arteta stood up for him. Some fans wanted Aaron Ramsdale to start in goal again, but the coach stuck with his countryman.

Youssef En-Nesyri had Sevilla’s best chance of the first half just before Arsenal took the lead, but his shot went just wide after breaking into the area.

In added time, another Sevilla attack was stopped, but Jesus did a great job in the middle of the pitch by tricking two defenders and opening up the pitch. He then played a quick pass to Martinelli, who scored.

The Brazilian was calm enough to go around Nyland and score on his first game in the Champions League, leaving Ramos unable to catch up.

Arsenal last made it to the tournament in 2017, and Arteta’s young team lost to Lens after taking the lead because they were too inexperienced. This time, though, they quickly scored a second goal.

Jesus came into the box from the left side and hit a beautiful shot across Nyland into the far top corner.

Nemanja Gudelj scored from Ivan Rakitic’s corner kick just before the hour mark, past a motionless Raya. This gave Sevilla a goal back.

Sevilla turned up the pressure on Arsenal, but they held on to win. Raya had one last scary moment when he punched a cross into the roof of his own net.

“We’re upset, this is the result, there are things to take away from the game, good ones and bad ones,” Ramos told Movistar.

“At least we had a reaction (to going behind), but it was not enough, we didn’t know how to put away our chances.

“This competition is very hard and small mistakes are vital and they make the difference.”
