Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the club are waiting for news on the extent of the ankle injury Philippe Coutinho sustained against Sunderland on Saturday.

The Brazil forward was stretchered off the field after just 34 minutes, following a challenge with Didier Ndong and going down.

The German manager said Coutinho will undergo a scan to determine the extent of his injury.

‘We have to wait for the scan. What we know in this moment it is something with the ankle and that’s it, so we all have to wait,’ Klopp told the Liverpool website.

‘He had pain, but pain gets better. In the first moment, it was obviously very painful but when I saw him at half-time, he said the pain was much better. We have to wait.

‘If I have no idea what it is, how can I imagine how long it will be [with him out]? I am actually quite an optimistic guy – so I hope he can train tomorrow!’

In addition, Klopp confirmed that Roberto Firmino sustained a knock which led to his substitution late in the match. ‘He is much better than Phil, but has pain in the calf.’

Reds striker Daniel Sturridge, however, was left out of the squad after reporting a tight calf muscle.

‘He had a tight calf. He hasn’t trained for two days and I have no idea when he is back. It is not sure that he can train tomorrow, so he was out because of this injury,’ Klopp said.

Liverpool will welcome Leeds United to Anfield in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.

Kick-off has been scheduled for 21:45.
