Liverpool has confirmed that Danny Ings will undergo knee surgery after being injured during his side’s EFL Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspurs last week.
The 24-year-old English forward was injured when he attempted to challenge in the closing stages of the game at Anfield.
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp revealed he will be without Ings for between seven to nine months after his operation and rehabilitation.
‘To say we are gutted would be an understatement; he is such a great boy and has worked so hard that he deserves better luck than this,’ Klopp told the Liverpool website.
‘I’m told the likely layoff is anywhere from between seven to nine months. He is mentally strong, physically strong and will have the very best treatment and rehab possible to make sure when he returns he is ready to play for us at the level we know he is capable of.’
Liverpool will next welcome Watford to Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday, with kick-off scheduled for 16:15.
