Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has called for calm after Ben Woodburn became the youngest scorer in the club’s history on Tuesday night.
The academy forward followed up his debut for the club with the second goal of the quarter-final clash, four minutes after striker Divock Origi had broken the deadlock in the 76th minute.
His strike made Reds history, with Woodburn becoming the youngest player, at 17 years and 45 days, ever to score for the senior team – a record previously held by Michael Owen.
Klopp was intent on remaining humble after Woodburn’s impressive debut in the EFL Cup, but nonetheless praised the young forward’s ability to score goals.
‘We know what Ben is capable of and what he is already able to do. My first job is to help these boys so that they can be the best. In this case, Ben Woodburn. There’s a lot of things to do, especially to keep the public away as long as possible,’ Klopp told the Liverpool website.
‘That’s quite a difficult thing to do. But on the other hand, we only bring him in because we want to use him. So that means when he’s on the pitch he’s absolutely allowed to score goals, to prepare situations, to make crosses – how Trent did, for example.
‘So, all good. I’m really happy for him. The only problem is I’m a little bit afraid about you [the media]. That’s why I’m so quiet on this. Think and do what you want, but don’t write anything – only “Goalscorer, Ben Woodburn”.’
Liverpool will return to the Premier League when they take on Bournemouth on Sunday.
The match at the Vitality Stadium kicks off at 15:30.
