Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town during their pre-season friendly at the John Smith’s Stadium on Wednesday.

Marko Grujic’s second goal of pre-season and a late penalty from Alberto Moreno was enough to ensure the Reds head to the United States on the back of a 2-0 victory, reports the Liverpool website.

Senegalese forward Sadio Mane then had the ball in the net in the 18th minute when he pounced on a defensive mix-up to slide home, only for the referee to spare the blushes of home keeper Coleman by awarding a free-kick.

Just as he did on his debut for the Reds at Fleetwood Town last week, Grujic once again impressed in the heart of the midfield in the first half and capped his performance with another goal on the half-hour mark.

Reds goalkeeper Loris Karius was called into action for the first time soon after when he palmed Lolley’s shot away and Grujic put Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead soon after.

Philippe Coutinho could have doubled his side’s lead soon after the opener, but the Brazilian saw his penalty saved after new signing Mane was judged to have been brought down in the area by Huddersfield goalkeeper Joel Coleman.

The second half was devoid of any real action at either end until Huddersfield had the first two real chances at goal when Joe Lolley and Rajiv van La Parra fired wide from distance.

However, the Reds responded quick and almost took the lead when Coutinho and Grujic combined to set-up Mane, who cut in from the right only for his effort to hit the side-netting.

Spanish defender Moreno converted a late penalty after Ryan Kent had been fouled in the 90th minute to hand Liverpool a 2-0 lead in the closing stages of the match.

Jurgen Klopp and his players will now travel to America on Thursday to continue their preparations for the 2016-17 campaign.
