Liverpool got off to a flying start as they blitzed Arsenal to win 4-3 in London on Sunday.

The Gunners enjoyed the better of the opening 45 minutes as Theo Walcott opened the scoring just a minute after missing a 30th minute penalty.

Arsene Wenger’s side failed to enter the break ahead as Philippe Coutinho beat Petr Cech with a stunningly accurate free kick in the first minute of time added on.

Despite being behind play in the first half it was Liverpool who responded the better to the half time instructions as Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane clicked into fifth gear to tear Arsenal’s fragile youth defence apart.

Lallana put his side in front in the 49th minute after guiding home Giorgino Wijnaldum’s cross. The Reds then put daylight between them as Man of the Match Coutinho prodded past Cech from Nathaniel Clyne’s cross in the 56th minute.

Seven minutes later Mane capped off his debut with a stunning solo strike which left Cech helpless on the floor, Klopp in hysterics and hundreds of Arsenal fans headed for the exit. It was Liverpool’s first quartet of goals on opening day since the start of the 1994-95 season against Crystal Palace.

Boos turned to cheers a minute later as Alex Oxald-Chamberlain gave Wenger some hope as he beat Simon Mignolet.

Calum Chambers made those who departed early question their decision as he reduced the deficit to one when he headed home with 15 minutes to play.

The visitors ultimately hung on for a massive win as Arsenal sulked down the tunnel to a chorus of jeers from the home crowd who have witnessed just one win on match day one in the previous 7 seasons.
