Manchester City saw their Uefa Champions League dreams ended for another season following a shock 3-1 loss against Lyon in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

City looked off the pace in the opening stanza, particularly at the back. Lyon on the other hand looked hungry and stormed into a surprise lead just before the half-hour mark when Maxwel Cornet caught Ederson off his line and curled the ball round the City goalkeeper.

City began to threaten the more the game went on and it looked only a matter of time until they equalised and it eventually came when Kevin De Bruyne got on the end of a cross following brilliant work from Raheem Sterling inside the penalty area with 69 minutes gone.

The English side began to turn on the pressure, but it was the French side who managed to take the lead again as Moussa Dembélé latched on to a Houssem Aouar pass before sliding his shot past Ederson. The goal was taken to VAR to check on a foul and possible offside in the build up but to Pep Guardiola’s dismay the goal stood.

Sterling then produced one of the misses of the season after somehow putting the ball over the bar when faced with an empty net in the six-yard box.

That miss proved to be costly as the Ligue 1 side wrapped things up during the next attack, with Dembélé reacting first to an Ederson save to force the ball over the line.
