Manchester United secured a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur while Southampton claimed a 1-0 victory over and Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils got off to a good start and had their first attempt on goal in the first minute when Paul Pogba’s strike at goal was saved by Spurs goalkeeper to deny the home side.
Six minutes later Spurs had a chance of their own when Son Heung-Min’s effort from outside the box was blazed high over there target.
A minute later and United came close to open the scoring when Henrikh Mkhitaryan had an attempt at goal but he guided his effort wide of the left post.
Christian Eriksen nearly gave his side th lead in the 18th minute but his effort from outside the box was well saved by the United shot-stopper.
However, United finally broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Mkhitaryan put the ball into the back of the net from a Ander Herrera through ball.
In the 33rd minute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic came close to doubling his side’s lead but he was dented by Spurs goalkeeper following a cross from Antonio Valencia.
Six minutes before the half time interval, Spurs had an opportunity to level matters but Harry Kane’s effort was guided just wide of the post.
United picked up where they left off in the second half when Matteo Darmian tried to play a through ball to Pogba but the French midfielder was flagged offside.
Victor Wanyama had a header at goal from a Eriksen set piece but his attempt went narrowly wide of the post in the 57th minute.
Two minutes later and Dele Alli’s strike from outside the box was guided just wide of the target.
Pogba had a chance to extend United’s when he fired a shot to the top corner but he was denied by the Spurs goalkeeper in the 63rd minute.
In the 69th minute, Eriksen had another attempt at goal but he was once again denied by David Da Dea.
Valencia came close to doubling his side’s lead in the 78th minute but his effort from outside the box was blocked on his way to the target.
However, Jose Mourinho’s heals on to their 1-0 lead until the final whistle of the match to walk away with all three points.
Meanwhile, Southampton claimed a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough at St Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Saints score the only goal of the match in the 53rd minute when Sofiane Boufal unleashed a strike from outside the box which was guided into the top left corner, as his side collected all three points in the match.
