Spain’s midfield maestro Andreas Iniesta was responsible for masterminding the downfall of the Czech Republic on Monday, writes WADE PRETORIUS.

Much of Spain’s first half dominance was due to the display by the veteran midfielder. He completed 100% of his take-ons to add to his 95% pass accuracy, according to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre.

Iniesta remained in control in the second half, leading the Spanish assault on Petr Cech’s goals before providing the pinpoint cross that clubmate Gerard Pique nodded into the back of the net with just three minutes remaining.

Iniesta’s post-match statistics were as impressive as his consistent presence in everything positive on pitch on Monday afternoon in Toulouse. After the final whistle, he ended with 107 touches as he created 5 chances over the course of the contest.

Spain coach Vincente del Bosque must be thankful that when other players faded through the contest Iniesta seemed to get even better. He misplaced just 8 of his 93 passes, with as many as 31% of them being hit to player in an advanced position.

The Barca veteran’s defensive ability was also on display against the Czechs, he won 4 of his 5 midfield duels.

An in-form Iniesta will go a long to ensuring Spain qualifying from their group and advance to the business end of the competition.
