Uruguay finished the their Copa America on a high while Mexico did enough to secure top spot in their last group match.

Uruguay salvaged some  pride on Monday night with a 3-0 win against Jamaica in the Group C finale for both teams at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Abel Hernandez scored off a pinpoint pass from Nicolas Lodeiro in the 21st minute, Jamaica’s Je-Vaughn Watson deflected a cross past his own goalkeeper, Andre Blake, for Uruguay’s second goal in the 66th minute and Matias Corujo ended the night with his 88th-minute goal for La Celeste.

Both teams had already been eliminated from advancing to the knockout round with two losses each in their first two group matches. Little was expected from Jamaica; Uruguay, the 15-time Copa America champion, fell short of expectations to be a contender.

In the other match played on Monday, a sensational individual effort from Jesús Manuel Corona lifted Mexico into first place in Group C after a 1-1 draw with Venezuela in Houston.

Although both teams advance to Saturday’s quarter-finals, the result however should be enough for Mexico to avoid top-ranked Argentina.

The draw also extends Mexico’s unbeaten streak to 22 games, setting a new record and puts the team in a showdown with the second-place team from Group D, to be played Saturday, June 18.
