Major League Soccer chief Don Garber says the league would welcome Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger with ‘open arms’.

The World Cup winner move from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich to Old Trafford in 2015 and has made 38 appearances last season for United but has recently been out of favour at the club.

The 32-year-old is yet to make his first appearance for the Red Devils under new manager Jose Mourinho, boosting speculations of the German moving away from the club.

Garber says they would be delighted to have Schweinsteiger in the MLS and would welcome him with ‘open arms’ if he decides to make the move to America.

‘Of course, we follow Bastian’s situation,’ Garber said.

‘He’s an old acquaintance for the United States, for example through the 2014 World Cup, when he played against the US team. He also played against the MLS All-Stars with Bayern in 2014.

‘We would welcome Bastian with open arms. He would be a leader for our many young players.’

FC Dallas president Dan Hunt says he has always admired the midfielder and has revealed that he would want the former Germany international to join the Texas club.

‘He’s a terrific player. I have admired him and the success his team had. It’s no coincidence. He’s a winner,’ Hunt saidSPOX.

‘At the moment, we only have space for one designated player and we wanted to fill this with a striker. Maybe it will change. We will see.’

Should he move, Schweinsteiger would follow other European greats like Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo and Steven Gerrard, who have all join teams in the MLS.
