Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has dismissed the hype surrounding Liverpool in the aftermath of his side’s 0-0 draw at Anfield on Monday.
Mourinho conceded the Reds have been impressive of late but nevertheless feels the media have got carried away with the side’s dynamic performances of late, which included an impressive win over Chelsea.
‘I think it was a more difficult game for them than it was for us,’ Mourinho told Sky Sports. ‘We knew it would be very difficult for them to score a goal and thought we’d score a goal to win the match, which we tried to do.’
Mourinho’s side had approached the contest in a rigid and defensive formation while they looked to press the Liverpool players in possession and hassle them out of possession. As the game wore on, United were forced steadily deeper, but both sides nevertheless produced chances to win the match.
‘We tried to start strong in both halves but they are a good team,’ the Portuguese conceded. ‘They are not the last wonder of the world like you [the media] say they are but they are a very good team so we had to adapt a little to them,’ he concluded.
United currently sit in seventh on the table with eight matches played, while Liverpool sit in fourth.
