Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino believes the big spending of Premier League clubs this transfer window is a sign of desperation.

The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool have all invested heavily of late, with United blowing in the region of £90-million on Paul Pogba alone.

Spurs, by contrast, have made just two relatively low-key additions, with the club bringing in the likes of defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama as well as forward Vincent Janssen for a combined £28-million.

‘That shows when you spend a lot of money it is because you are not happy with your squad or your players and you are desperate to improve your squad,’ Pochettino told Sky Sports.

‘I am very happy with my players, I think it is very difficult to find better players than we have,’ he added.

Pochettino nevertheless hinted he was looking to make a couple of additions to his squad before the close of the transfer window.

‘We are open to adding one or two players or maybe no one. But if we have the possibility to sign a player that can improve us, we are very open,’ he explained.

Spurs finished third in the Premier League last season as a poor run of form late on in the campaign ended their hopes of catching eventual champions Leicester City.

Tottenham face Everton in their opening game of the new season at Goodison Park on Saturday.
