An outstanding team effort helped Croatia to a famous 2-1 win over Spain on Tuesday.
Ivan Perisic’s late goal helped Croatia to the top of Group D in spite of star midfielder Luka Modric’s absence.
Croatia had just 31% of the ball but made it count, according to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match centre.
Spain completely dominated the opening period of the match but by the of the contest Croatia had seized control and were full value for their win.
After going down to Morata’s 7th minute goal, Croatia ended with four shots on target; one more than Spain. In total, Croatia had just two fewer efforts as Spain ended with 15 shots.
Ivan Perisic and Nikola Kalinic both got their names on the scoresheet and will go down as heroes but the pair had just 62 touches between them. Cesc Fabregas had 97 for Spain.
Such was the tenacious nature of their play, Croatia ended up winning 54% of their duels; Spain won 45%. Another key stat which proves that teamwork is bigger than individual stars was that Spain made just 8 interceptions while Croatia made 12 as their ‘all hands on deck’ defensive effort paid dividends.
Spain will now face Italy and Croatia are set to play Belgium.
