Superstar Manchester United signing Paul Pogba is set to make his first appearance for the Red Devils since his return to the club.
United will welcome the visit of Southampton to Old Trafford on Friday evening as the side looks to build on its opening day victory over Bournemouth. United, who also recorded victory over defending champions Leicester City in the Community Shield a fortnight ago, will be hotly anticipating the impact of world record transfer Paul Pogba.
France star Pogba was absent for United’s Premier League opener through suspension but is now set to feature alongside Chris Smalling, with the defender having returned from a ban of his own.
The Saints, meanwhile, will he hopeful of causing an upset following an opening day stalemate against Watford but are looking short on firepower following the exits of Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane, the club’s two top goalscorers last season. Meanwhile, the side’s captain Jose Fonte is a fitness doubt while the likes of left back Ryan Bertrand is sidelined by injury.
Matches between the sides have been closely contested in recent seasons with the sides having won two apiece and drawn one of their last five fixtures. The Saints are indeed the last side to have beaten United at home, with the club unbeaten in their 11 home matches since.
Southampton have struggled defensively of late as they have conceded in a run of 13 matches in succession, despite boasting the second best away defensive record in the Premier League last season.
The action gets underway at 21:00.
