Portugal midfielder Andre Gomes has admitted Portugal expected more from talismanic forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Real Madrid superstar has failed to hit his best form for his country despite an outstanding showing in the side’s crucial draw against Hungary in the group stages, in which he scored twice.
Now all the way through to the semi-finals, critics have lamented the side for failing to win a single game in regulation time in the tournament thus far.
Gomes, meanwhile, has conceded Ronaldo’s form may have had a large part to play in the side’s lack of conviction.
‘It is not the time to talk about individuals,’ the midfielder told the press, as reported by Goal.
‘Cristiano works for the team which is the most important thing. There are 23 players here. He’s scored two goals – we were probably expecting more, it is true,’ he admitted.
Ronaldo and Co. will be back in action when they face Wales for a place in the final of Euro 2016 on Wednesday evening.
The match will be played at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Lyon. Kick-off is at 21:00.
