Ronaldo to the rescue

Hungary faced off against Portugal in Euro 2016 action with Cristiano Ronaldo proving his pedigree and saving a draw for the Portuguese.

Portugal started the game the better of the sides and enjoyed 67 percent of the possession in the first-half, according to SASoccermag’s Opta-powered match stats.

The Portuguese also had the superior shot count. The Portuguese hit 12 attempts, four of which were on target. Hungary, for their part, registered just four attempts, with three of those also on target.

Hungary led the game briefly but the score read 1-1 at the interval.  Then, the game exploded into life following the break.

Ronaldo was the hero for Portugal as he twice rescued the side with goals, in addition to having provided the assist for Nani’s first-half equaliser. The forward had 46 touches of the ball during the game and fired off a tremendous 10 shots on goal.

The forward scored his first goal of the tournament with a delicate back-heel, before he bettered a defender in the air to power home his second off a header. Ronaldo also made 23 of his 26 attempted passes in the tie.

Portugal took control of the game in the final passage of play as they ended the night with 63 percent of the possession. But they couldn’t make it count enough to score a fourth time, the scores ending level at 3-3.
