Portugal and Poland face off in the quarter-final of Euro 2016 with both sides hoping star players Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski can power them to victory.

Portugal needed their Real Madrid talisman firing on all cylinders in their final group stage came as the superstar forward netted twice to secure the required draw against Hungary before Portugal edged through into the quarter-finals following a late win against Croatia.

Portugal has drawn their last five consecutive matches in Euro competition, with all four of their matches this tournament level pegging after 90 minutes.

Poland, meanwhile, prevailed on penalties against Switzerland after being pegged back by a late Xherdan Shaqiri wonder goal. The Poles will be desperate for their star Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski, to find form as the tournament reaches its final stages.

Lewandowski has struggled to make in impact for his national side of late and is currently without a goal in the tournament. Indeed, the striker has failed to find the back of the net in his last seven internationals.

The sides have historically been closely matched with Portugal edging four wins to Poland’s three in the sides’ 10 meetings. The most recent tie between the sides ended 0-0 back in 2012.

Both sides will be at full strength for the tie while the winners will progress to face either Wales or Belgium.

Poland coach Adam Nawałka is confident that his side can progress past their more fancied opponents after improving with each game so far in France.

‘We know our strengths and that we are capable of going through. It’s no surprise that we’ve got results at this tournament. We’ve been making good progress and we expect to deliver a high level of football.’ said Nawalka.

Fernando Santos believes Portugal will be up against a very strategic side who will be looking to hit them on the break.

‘They’re a very strategic team,’ said Santon.

‘They go from defence to attack very quickly and you can tell a lot of work has been done behind the scenes. When we have the ball ourselves, we’ll try and take advantage of their weak points.’

The match will take place at the Stade Velodrome, Marseille.

Kick-off is at 21:00.
