Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has left the national team squad and has returned to Manchester United for further assessment on his injury.

The 31-year-old striker sat out of the Three Lions training session at Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground due to a minor knee injury.

Gareth Southgate already set to rest his captain for the visit of Spain to Wembley Stadium tomorrow night, Rooney has been allowed to return to his club for further assessment.

The interim manager has confirmed that would’ve sticked with his decision to omit Rooney from the starting lineup even if the striker was match fit.

‘I wouldn’t have started Wayne in this game anyway,’ Southgate said.

Southgate when on to named Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson as the stand-in captain and he insists that the team should not build lead by one player but by ‘many leaders’ if they want to gain success going forward.

‘The key for me is I believe we should have several leaders. I don’t think we can have just one captain,’ he added.

‘Too much responsibility has been on Wayne – we need to share that. When you have a team of leaders you can have a lot of success.’

England will now welcome Spain to Wembley Stadium when the two side’s meet for an international friendly on Tuesday.

Kicks-off is scheduled for 10:00.
