Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is now the Red Devils’ record goal-scorer in Europe with 39 goals.

The 31-year-old scored a 35th-minute goal against Feyenoord in the Europa League match at Old Trafford on Thursday, which sent him clear of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s impressive tally of 38 in Europe.

The England international equalled Van Nistelrooy’s tally when he netted in their away defeat to Fenerbahce earlier this month.

Rooney now looks set to become the club’s all-time record goal-scorer in all competitions. He currently boasts 248 goals for United, just one short of Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing total of 249.

The former Everton striker is delighted that his side put four goals past the Dutch side, and equally elated about his record-breaking goal.

‘It’s a great feeling to score goals and to score goals for this club. I’m pleased and I’m sure there’s plenty more to come. I’m happy with the win, first of all, but also with the goal,’ Rooney told the Manchester United website.

‘We’re pleased we got the four goals.

‘I think the second goal killed the game. We knew even though we were in control of the game at 1-0 you never know what can happen, so the second one really killed them off. I think overall we played some good stuff. ‘

Manchester United will take on West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The match at Old Trafford kicks off at 18:30.
