England veteran Wayne Rooney is aware that his country will need to improve if they are to stand any chance in the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament.

The Red Devils man spoke in the aftermath of his country’s 1-0 over 10-man Portugal, the side’s final warm-up fixture before the tournament gets underway.

It was a largely lacklustre display from the Three Lions on the day, as they failed to create clear-cut chances, despite a late Chris Smalling header saving their blushes late-on.

Rooney, who captains the side, has revealed his frustration at the performance.

‘We won the game, but it was always difficult for us when Portugal went down to 10 men,’ he told ITV Sport.

‘They made it difficult, but we kept going and we got the win so that was obviously important to us.

‘We know in these games there have been a lot of changes. We haven’t been at our best, but we have won the three games which is important especially as a young team.’

The 30-year-old has recognised that even though the side won the game, they failed to produce a high level performance.

‘We are winning games when we are not playing well. We have to improve and in tournament football you have to improve to win games.

‘We didn’t have many chances, none of us, so it is something the manager is working on and Portugal made it difficult.’

Rooney managed just 12 goals from 40 appearances for Manchester United this season, but the striker has slowly began to drop deeper and deeper at club level, where his precise passing ability is seeing him evolve into more of a midfielder.
