Rui Patricio shines as Portugal triumph

Eder scored the winner but it was Rui Patricio who shone the brightest for Portugal as they claimed Euro 2016 glory.

Outplayed for large portions in Paris, the 28-year-old Sporting goalkeeper was immense in dealing with the threats posed on his goals.

According to SASoccermag.co.za’s Opta-powered match centre, the goalkeeper made seven saves in a wonderful individual performance.

Rui Patricio was under even more pressure following Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury but he stood up to the task of defending his line in superb fashion.

On the grand stage in Saint Denis with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Moussa Sissoko firing at his goals, Rui Patricio’s clean sheet was central to Portugal’s first major triumph.

Rui Patricio denied Griezmann in the opening minutes from a well directed header from the Atletico Madrid forward, the tournament’s most lethal finisher.

It was his save from Sissoko’s fiercely struck effort from long range that perhaps lifted his side to greater heights as they grew in confidence from his display. His effort to deny Giroud in the second period was straight from the goalkeeping textbook as he kept a clean sheet that earned his side a famous win.
