Sevilla beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford in their round-of-16 second leg encounter, knocking the three-time winners out of the Champions League.
After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Manchester United knew that a win would send them through to the next round. Sevilla, however, did not concede an away goal and would have been hoping that this slight advantage could give them the edge.
Jose Mourinho’s team started the game positively but failed to create any chance of real substance. Sevilla grew into the game and while they had good possession in United’s third, they lacked the quality to test David de Gea.
Manchester United finished the half on the front foot with Marouane Fellaini drawing Sergio Rico into a decent save. The game was goalless at half-time as both teams lacked the necessary cutting edge in the final third.
The second half soon fell into the same pattern as the first with both teams failing to find the final ball as it became apparent that both managers will have to look to their benches to make the difference.
Vincenzo Montella brought on Wissam Ben Yedder while Mourinho brought on Paul Pogba.
It was Montella’s substitute that worked though, as on 74 minutes the French striker was slipped through on goal and made no mistake with the finish, smashing the ball past De Gea into the bottom corner.
United were reeling as Sevilla doubled their lead four minutes later through Ben Yedder again, who this time found a free header at the back post. His header crossed the line despite De Gea tipping it on to the underside of the crossbar.
Romelu Lukaku gave United a glimmer of hope when he smartly finished from a Marcus Rashford corner with six minutes to play – but it was too little, too late.
Manchester United are out of the Champions League as Sevilla advance to the quarter-finals.
